My favorite meal planning tool!
Plan To Eat (PTE) is a tool for storing your recipes, planning a menu, and generating a shopping list. Their app has a spot on the home page of my phone – that is a spot of honor, prime real estate! Before Plan To Eat, I tried other meal planning systems where menus were already created for me along with a shopping list for that menu. Sounds great, right? The problem I always had with those systems was my family didn’t care for many of the meals. This led to wasted food and lots of frustration.
The Recipe Section:
It is very easy to add recipes to Plan To Eat. They have a recipe clipper that lets you add recipes from any website to your collection at PTE. This is SO handy – I don’t have to have a bunch of bookmarked recipes, I just import them into PTE and it also keeps track of where they came from. Here’s what the recipe area looks like:
The Planner:
The meal planning part of PTE is magical – it’s a calendar layout and you can drag your choices onto it. On the left side are all your recipes sorted by type and it’s super easy to drag them over to the calendar. You can also add notes in the calendar that won’t show up on your shopping list – for instance, you might want to note activities that will impact mealtimes. See menu in progress:
The Shopping List:
What makes it really magical, though, is that all the ingredients for these items are now on your SHOPPING LIST! The shopping list is my favorite feature, even when I don’t use the planner part to populate it!
From the list it generated for you, it is super easy to delete stuff you already have before you head to the store. Plus you can add whatever else you need that isn’t on the menu. This shopping list is my most used part of PTE, honestly.
You can also customize the list of stores and categories. The app works when I’m at the store but I add to/edit my shopping list daily, even when I’m not going to the store.
I have a list going for my favorite grocery store but also special lists for Costco, Home Depot, etc. When I realize I need something from Home Depot, I will add it to that list in PTE, even though it is not meal related! I also have a “store” that is our favorite BBQ joint and I keep our usual order in there so it’s always handy the next time I go.
Here are all my stores in Plan To Eat – I have one for stocking stuffer ideas, Christmas shopping, and Thanksgiving to keep those groceries separate from my regular grocery list. The Publix/Walmart FL is the one I use when we are going on vacation there.
